Does 0w20 give better mpg than 5w30?

Hello everyone,

I bought a 2013 Auris 1.6 back in January this year. Mileage is currently 34k.  It's due for an oil change.

I need clarification as to which oil grade I need to use.  I have looked at the other topics but could not find one for a car with similar age, mileage and engine size.

I called the Toyota Leicester's service centre and they advised 5w30.  However, the manual states 0w20.

I understand the car currently has 5w30.  However I only get a combined average of  34mpg.  Should I go for 0w20 and will it increase mpg?

Has anyone experienced any issues with using 0w20 in a 1.6 valvematic engine?

Toyota's preferred oil for the petrol Auris is 0W-20, which may improve economy slightly depending on the type of journeys, etc the car does. Under Block Exemption Toyota cannot insist dealers use a specific oil. I've had two Auris 1.33's from new, both of which had 0W-20 used for each service, and experienced no issues.

Both oils are fine for the engine, and i guess they advised 5w30 because they had it more, or only that one, in stock.

I have 5W30, should be a bit better for car maintenance, while 0w20 should be a bit better for the economy,  the difference is not that big.

The MPG difference a 0W20 vs a 5W30 will be in the 1% range for most usage. If you do a lot of sub zero cold starts and very short runs then that difference will extend slightly.
