VSC check Parking brake inoperable

Hi Everyone,

I looked at a 59 plate Avensis d4d 2.2, initially the car wouldn't start and it came up with a warning light to check the VSC and that the parking brake was inoperable.

We charged the Battery and it started straight away with both warning lights gone, Other than that the test drive was perfect and the car was immaculate. On the side of caution I had my pal who is a mechanic check it over, he found no issues.

I know it's probably overkill asking for essentially a third opinion but urging on the side of caution. Apparently the only reason those warnings would come on is because it's an electric handbrake and VSC is also electric and because there was no power it would say there's an issue.

I am worrying over nothing

Hi Niall, welcome to TOC 🙂

Are you buying from a trader? If so, you have good consumer rights for 6 months after purchase - if you buy privately you have none.

The Avensis T27 isn't perfect but it has only 2 real chinks in it's armour imo - cracking of front door skins by the hinges & the EPB, both of which only manifest in a very small no. of cars. The problem with the EPB is that replacing the actuator if needed is very expensive (at a dealer probably £1200+).

Thanks Heidfirst,

I'm buying from a trader and they also give me a 12 month warranty which gives me further piece of mind. I'm going to go for it and have a full detailed inspection conducted after.
