The basics of the "side" front windows is so that windows are seen to be even all around else the Police are not very happy about it and pull you over anyway.

No the basis of the rules is that the front side windows let at least 70% of light through. There are no rules governing the rear side windows or rear screen. Police can measure how much light is let through by using light measuring equipment. I would have thought a glass replacement company would be able to supply replacement glass of an equivalent tint to match the other rear side window without too much trouble.

Does your insurance policy cover you for replacement glass, not just windscreen?

Interesting... well if it doesn't cover the rear side windows or rear window then there will be a blind spot if it's tinted more or darkened out completely and then how can it be said the driver is driving safely with due care and attention? I've seen a TV Police programme that advised the rear windows were too dark, and that did include the front side ones too. So there is a maximum tint limit or can you just blank them out and make the car a van in effect? Not saying you're wrong, but just can't follow the logic why the front windows would be any different to the rear ones if a driver needs to see out clearly. Outside looking in can be black, but looking inside out then surely it would need to be the same grade tint?

No, you can have the rear windows & rear screen totally blacked out/painted over or whatever you like - as the link says "There are no rules for tinting the rear windscreen or rear passenger windows.". The windscreen & front windows must comply with the regulations.

You have wing mirrors for when you can't see to the rear via the rearview mirror e.g. carrying a large load in an estate car/hatchback. If you want to make a car into a van that would be upto you but the rear windows would need to be replaced with solid & the raise/lower disabled (as they have done on the Landcruiser Utility Commercial) & then you can have fun arguing with DVLA about classification ...  😛.

Ah that explains a lot about how it's all such a grey area

It isn't a grey area. The tinting of windscreen and front side windows are governed by rules, the rear side windows and rear screen aren't.
