2006 Avensis. How to use the MP3 player?

Hi all. Just got this car yesterday. The stereo say's on the front that it is MP3/WMA/CD. Where on earth can you plug your MP3 player in to? I have looked everywhere and can't find anything. It doesn't help that I don't have the manual for this. I was under the impression this unit came with Navi/MP3 player/Radio/CD Player?

Any help would be appreciated.

On car radios of that age 'MP3/WMA' usually meant that the unit could play MP3 or WMA files burnt onto a CD-ROM disc. The stereo in my 2009 Auris has the same markings on and it can play files in those formats from a disc.

Unless the radio has an 'AUX' socket you won't be able to plug anything into it. However it is possible to retro fit an AUX socket and/or bluetooth facility by using a unit that plugs into the CD changer port. I fitted one to my Auris and it works very well.

That makes sense now, thanks. My eldest boy normally sits up front with me and watches movies on my phone and I play it through the stereo on my last car. I must add that it was a BMW 3 series and the most unreliable car I have ever had. It was a money pit. Spent £4000 on it since last November and it's still not right. Back to Jap cars, never had a problem with them in the past. Back on topic lol, I will do what you have done and just buy one of those radio transmitters until then.

Your car is the previous model to my 2009 T27, but the devices I have were designed to work with your car. Here is what I did to add Bluetooth/USB/SD/AUX adapter to my car -

Here are links to the adapters :-

These are the cheaper examples and I have both but currently using the LaPower version even though the sound via bluetooth is mono and not as loud. The other version which has as the additional controller, has a better bluetooth sound, but cannot take calls if listening to the built in radio or CD. The LAPower takes calls regardless of the source.
Since your son wants to pipe the sound to the Speakers, the AUX function of the adapters will be useful.
Before buying the adapter, make sure your stereo is compatible. The standard CD/radio are all fine, but the later Nav version may not work or an additional Y cable may be required.

Hope find the suitable solution.

  • 2 years later...

Giving the fact that 2 years have already passed since your initial post, I am sure you have managed to solve your problem. I would really like to get an update from you on that. Toyota makes some of the best cars in the world, but their old models aren't famous for their entertainment options. Basically, you can't watch a YouTube video like you can do with the latest Toyota cars. The only way you can watch a video from YouTube sitting in the car is using https://youtube-mp3.me/fr/fr-2/ and having those videos downloaded on your phone previously.

The original poster (OP) didn't have a problem, just misunderstanding which was explained. He was satisfied with the answer and was looking at options, which I advised him. Sometimes when I am parked up waiting in the car, I watch videos on my phone, streaming the audio from the car Speakers via bluetooth. I also have the AUX socket as another option. I use a Bluetooth/ USB adapter plugged into the CD changer port at the rear of the stereo, as detailed in my earlier post above. Most not all Toyota stereos were compatible.

What do you want to know?
