Hi guys,

I have a 1996N Carine E 1.8GS. Its leaking Power steering fluid. Not sure if its the rack or pump. (Most likely the rack.) Where can I get this fixed and how much would it cost.

Or is there also a cheap fix alternative.

cheers

a reconditioned power steering rack for a mondeo is close to £ 200 sooooooo being a toyota its safe to say you can add some ££££££££ to that :( not sure if there are rubber seals that can be changed to be cost effective ? just had a look at a rack for a celica and there are what looks like rubbers either end and in the part where the steering wheel shaft fixes to.

Hi there,

Just came across this post. I had a leak on my steering rack about a year ago, you should be able to tell where the leak is if you look from underneath. The rack was 200 quid recon, or 900 from Toyota. You're probably right in assuming that took the recon. Fitting it was a little tricky and make sure that you get the tracking done again afterwards to be on the safe side.

The rack has been fine since it was changed so I've no complaints about using recon. There is a place in Bristol that will do them cheaper than 200, about 120quid if I remember rightly, but that was after I'd changed mine.

Turning and holding the steering wheel at full lock does nothing to help the power steering hydraulics though...
