On a long drive my wife's '98 Caldina started missing and coughing. She took it to a local mechanic who suggested a coil or coils were stuffed. So I ordered and fitted a replacement set of coils. However the motor would not run at all with the new coils, even though it would run (very roughly) with just one of the old coils fitted. I thought I must have received a dud set of coils and returned them.

But when I fitted the second set from a different supplier (Aliexpress) it still would not run. I tested one of the new coils and it does spark while cranking the starter. Now I'm thinking there must be something else wrong. It almost starts, but then dies straight away. It is almost like the ECU is detecting a fault and shutting it off.

Any ideas people?
