hello guys, i have some problems with my Corolla. Last week in the morning when i tried to go driving with my Corolla it cranked but didn't start. I cranked Battery empty when i came back from work. I loaded Battery full again next day, took back seat away and tested fuel pump, no electric is going there. Car is 2007 corolla 1,6 dual vvti, manual transmission, 283000km, LHD

Here is what i have done so far.

Put straight electric from Battery to fuel pump and it works

Fuel pump is getting earth/ground on other pin

Tested all the fuses with multimeter, everything looks ok

Tested all the relays what i can find(3pcs in engine room, and 1 inside car, flasher relay i didn't test), all relays have ~150ohms on + and -

There is no fault codes

I have tried to read electric diagrams, i can see there is c/opn relay but i can't find it anywhere

i see in diagrams theres also EFI main relay somewhere but i can't find it

tomorrow ill try to put straight electric to pump and try to start it to see if i have spark

Is electric going to pump only when cranking?

I can see on torque software when cranking i have rpm info

Any suggestions what to do next?

Is there

sorry about my broken english

Hi,

Not sure if this helps but I can see those relays on the wiring diagram, and on our UK models, the EFI relay is in the engine bay relay box and assume the C/Opn relay is in the  box under the dashboard, but the picture of your box looks different the the diagram of our uk box.

As well as the relays coil resistance you need to check the contacts resistance when activated as they might be pitted/burnt / defective etc.

Our Corollas ended in 2006/7, then becoming the Auris, you might try that forum if no one else helps as the wiring /relay may be more like yours ??

hi thx for input. I've done more checking and looks like fuel pump is pumping when i crank engine. I put test light on fuel pump connector and cranked, it lighted. After this i checked all the spark plugs and they were wet, i took spark plugs out and insert them in ignition coil, can see small spark when cranking. Should spark be very visible?

I'm baffled about this, i really hope it's not ECU what is broken. It's trying to start but wont just start. I have cheap eBay obd dongle and torque pro, i can see RPM when cranking, so it can't be cranksaft position sensor, right?

Talked today with guy who's working on toyota, he said C/opn relay is inside instrument panel and can't be changed.

I don't have any means to measure fuel pressure but maybe it's okay because wet spark plugs?

Any ideas?

Hi,

You might see some Sparks on some of the Ytubes to gauge how strong yours are.

From the models I have seen that relay is on the Instrument Panel J/B , so would have thought its a plug in one like  most others ?

Looking in my Haynes manual its states these causes for Failing to start -

Battery.

Battery terminal, chassis earth connections.

Faulty Plugs /gaps etc

Low compression or other mechanical failure like timing chain/camshaft.

No mention of fuel problems but suppose that goes without saying, expect some of the sensors must also have some influence on the ecu ?

Not something I have had to work on so cannot offer any real advice .....  again you could web search ytube for an answer - seems a few on Ytube

Could it be the Immobiliser not de-activating? I've something weird going on with my Alarm not activating so the immobiliser does not activate either, however the car starts and drives ok. If the immobilizer is engaged it won't start whatever you try. Disconnect the Battery completely for 10 mins and then see whether it will start.

i can see security light flashing in middle console below radio and after i put key inside it stops flashing. I've charged Battery 2 times already and car has been without electric over 12h both times. If it would be immobilizer would it give spark or fuel?

Im getting hopefully tomorrow spark plug tester and fuel pressure test kit so i can rule those out.

Guy working in Toyota told me c/opn relay is behind/inside intrumentpanel J/B? , mounted in circuitboard and can't be changed but i don't think that's the problem because i can see test lamp light in fuel pump connection when cranking. He also said something about if there is enough fuel pressure in fuel line, fuel pump won't prime when you turn key on ACC

Do you guys have any idea how to diagnose bad ECU?

I have check engine light on when i turn key to ACC and when cranking all the lights in dashboard shuts down, is it normal? Even though i have had this car for 6 months now i can't remember is this normal behavior

i think my cars instrument panel looks like this

Hi,

Know what you mean, just had a look at mine.

Turning the IGN on, the backlights glow white and within the rev counter dial there are several red icons, some of which start going out on their own after a few seconds.

If you turn the IGN on and get all the Red icons on, and then straight away crack the engine the backlights go out while its cranking, but the Red icons stay illuminated, until the engine runs and they go out as normal.

One thing that does concern me from you original picture of that cover, it looks like the seal was broken and dirt / water or both has got in..?

Could things be corroded under there  ?  - perhaps where that C/PON relay  is ..??

No idea on how to test a ECU, would think its a specialists job but worth a Web Search , someone might have posted such info ..?

Why do you suspect the ECU ?

As well as electrical, eg spark plug coils etc, it could be things like fuel injectors etc etc .

Would the services of a local garage be cheaper or perhaps even joining breakdown  service offering home start ?

hi, it was !Removed! weather when i took the picture, few drops went inside fuse/relay box.

Im just thinking worst case scenario when thinking bad ecu :)

I've been looking somekind of mobile toyota service here but here is none. Towing cost ~130€ and i really want to fix it myself, i feel like im quitting if haven't done everything i can do.

Today Im getting fuel pressure test kit and spark tester.

Yesterday i searched on internet and found out that my bluetooth dongle and torque software can't access everywhere, it can only read basic things on my ECU (or on any car), im getting tomorrow better reader to try if it can do more. If it doesn't i maybe have chance to get toyota's techstream next week which can access to all ECU's on my car

If you've plugged in a diagnostic and got no codes then the ECU is reading correctly else it would error.

can somebody tell me what sensor is this? My cars sensor is covered in oil.

Also if somebody know where ECU gets RPM information, is from crankshaft position sensor or somewhere else?

looks like this sensor is crankshaft position sensor.

Yesterday guy from insurance company came, ready to tow car to shop if it's broken. I charged Battery night before and he came looking, he cranked engine with WOT, after about 1minute cranking it started look like it might start, and it started :)

It was just flooded, weird because i took spark plugs out 2 times, cleaned them and tried to start but nothing. Well shame on me. Any ideas why engine floods? This morning it started again normally.

I feel like a real car mechanic now, lol

The ECU does odd things if you disconnect wires. If you do, disconnect the Battery and let the ECU re-learn for 15 mins when driving. Otherwise, if it appears to be flooding then it is more like the injectors aren't delivering fuel so it will back pressure. One thing to try is put some injector cleaner in the fuel tank and see if it improves the starting.
