VIN number

Just on My Toyota, I checked the VIN number they have with the actual VIN on the plate in the car.  Both agree perfectly.  VNKKD3D320A122993

In an idle moment, I tried decoding it but but it doesn't seem to work very well.  Apart from my not finding a good online decoder, the Wiki pages don't have a year identifier zero as the tenth digit.  I tried going to Toyota's page and when I put it in the search box, it comes up as being invalid.

All this seems very strange.  No issues, and not worried, just curious.

The Toyota site you used is Toyota USA so may not help with European market vehicles.

The rules regarding vin configuration are amended constantly as the configuration needs altering so often as we produce so many cars nowadays, otherwise we would have run out of vin configurations years ago. The info given on various sites is very generalised and in many cases out of date.

Whilst certain items carry over such as 17 digits and world manufacturer codes the method of decoding the vin varies by region, this is noted on your first link under "classification" where in europe we use ISO standard 3779 which differs from the American standard which is used by the decoders often found on the web and also under "Components" where position 10 on an EU vin is not an age identifier.
