Do you guys think that it is worth spending extra cash on the rev3 or do you think that the rev2 is good enough.

Obviously still learning about these cars, But still unsure as to what I want.

Oh and does anyone have any advise on where to buy these cars, Like a good importing garage or something - bearing in mind i live in London

Go for a rev3 as u get more BHP and also the rear lights are a lot nicer IMO...also few other features which are nicer...

Go for the rev3

rev 2 has more torque :)

if your after a 2 speak to rash :)

normally aspirated rev2 is a better car

turbo rev3 is a better car

IMHO

not only your opinion.. :rolleyes::lol:

hmm... no one ever mention the legendary Rev1? it's a cooler car... "drifter car"... :P :D

the insurance company should have increase the premium rate on Rev1..

Yo George,

is it turbo you are after....? personally i would say go for a REV-3 but their is a SIGNIFICANT price different between a REV2 and REV3...

Best bet would be to test drive each car and see which you prefer and which you are comfortable with - (sensible mode on) bear in mind running costs/insurance etc etc.. dont put all your eggs in 1 basket and pay full whack for a REV3 and then struggle to keep up with the cost of running it. (sensible mode off  )

Rev 3 tubby all the way m8!, at least u didnt make the same mistake as me and just go out and buy an mr2 without doin any research. I wish I knew before I bought mine :(

I`m paying for it now :(

I dont really see the point in driving both and seeing which one youll be comfortable with...both are very fast and both are deathtraps if driven equally bad. The decision on which one to go for will be based on your bank balance imo. Obviously rev3 if you can afford it. Youll make the money back in a way by modding...as youll get more power for less money on a rev3.

Posted

If youre gonna be modifying it for fairly high power (300bhp+) than spend the extra cash now instead of later and get a rev3 which will respond to tuning better than a rev2. As Rash said though there is a huge price gap between a good rev2 and a good rev3!

Youre still comin this saturday aint you mate? my rev 2s unmodified apart from an apexi intake so you can judge how much more power you'll want this saturday!

Posted

This was why I went for a Rev 2. Decent low mileage mint example will cost siginficantly less than a poor rev 3.

And can still be tuned to nearly 300bhp easily.

Posted

Well I don't really want to modify one (I say this now but may change mind, lol)

But I don't really want to spend too much money either. I want a good example which goes well as standard.

My Renault Sport now is down to 6 secs 0-60 so as long as it does that or quicker I will be very happy.

Rev2 sounds liike it would be very good value, However I definatelty want ABS and air/con.

Does that change things,

Deus - Am still on for Saturday, Shall bring my car along too!

Posted

Rev 2 has aircon but not sure about ABS, pretty sure it does though.

Posted

yep all the tubbies have A/C (mine needs regassing though after 14 years) , ABS, P/S and some rev2s like mine came with LSD (rev3s have it standard)

rev2s are still very tunable if you have a good starting block - filter/exhaust/decat and a good condition ignition system gives you quite a bit more hp to play with

I've got a rev2 .. wish I had a rev3 .. but I couldn't afford the step up when I bought it ..

mores the pity considering the power mods you done... a rev 3 with your effort would have been even more class than your current mota..

and thats sayin summat

Although I have a Rev3...

A gen3 3S-GTE is no better a platform with which to make big power than a gen2. Although the gen3 produces more power in its stock configuration, all of that power comes from simple improvements that can be applied to a gen2 engine. Once you reach about 300rwhp, the playing field is essentially level.

...depends how much money you have, and how far you want to go.

You could spend £6k on a Rev3 tubby... or spend £4k on a Rev2 tubby and then £2k in mods!

Ooooooooooooooooooohhhhhh... choices. From most Rev2 owners I've spoken to, they only regret (right word?) going for a Rev2 when their modding gets further and further on.

That's the worst excuss ever...did you read the linked thread?? EVERYONE use's that excuss but spend EXACTLY the same cash you'd spend on the type II on the Type III and see who comes out on top!!

Again often said in "defence"........half the time they have never owned or driven a Type III.

There's your point?!... spend the same on a Rev2 and on a Rev3 and see who comes out on top? Now, If my base 220bhp Rev2 cost me £4k and I spend £2k modding, I will end up with more than the nominal 245bhp Rev3 which cost £6k.

If I already had both cars, and spent the same on just tuning parts then yes, you'd end up with more power on the Rev3. If you read the thread you'll see they have the same potential... this does not however, say how much more you'd have to spend to match the Rev2 to Rev3. That wasn't the question. :P

...did you read the linked thread??

...yup... did you?!

Obviously go Rev3 if you can afford it, yes... but don't be put off a Rev2... that's all I'm getting at.

well i'll be a rev2 tubby boy in 4 weeks, from what i read if i do this (see below) to my rev2 ill be as well off as a rev3 but i'd say its likely my head gasket will go, thats my main

'problem' with rev2 no steel gasket.

extremeboost 3" down pipe (£190)

Blitz Nurspec R (£500)

Blitz SUS filter (from my n/a, got an adapter) (£0)

Helix stage 1, 4 paddle clutch (£300)

Unichip (or ideal world motec) (£500)

I think that from 3 years of passive reading i think that should be good for 280 - 300 bhp?? on my rev2 transplant.

Posted

Simply keep it cool and up the boost ..

A rev3 is a better starting block .. but in the high tuning stakes you'll have nothing stock in the engine anyhow ..

I see what your saying....I didn't look at it that way  is it REALLY that hard to find a cheap good type III??

Possibly...depends on what "high tuning stakes" means to everyone?? between 220-250 kw's at the rears would be good enough for me :)
