1.6 1zr-fe engine started whining

Car is 1.6 2007 Auris, with 91kw engine, 1zr-fe engine, with 100k miles

I just got back from a 300 miles round trip, and in the last let's say 15 miles while on highway, the car started whining.

My guess is probably the water pump, or at least i hope it's water pump, and the bearing, i do not think it was ever replaced.

Other possibilities are alternator, or the AC, but when i turn the AC off, the clutch should disengage, so i guess we can rule this one out.

Any thoughts are appreciated.

Plus one for water pump. You can use a long screwdriver but be careful. Touch the metal end of the screwdriver to the body of the water pump while engine is running and touch your ear to the handle of the screwdriver and that way you can listen for a strange noises, you can check other engine parts like ac, alternator bearing too. Screwdriver will be your doctors equipment, I am not joking but once again be careful with the moving parts .

Good luck

I know about the trick, but where i currently live, i got no space, nor the tools that long, all back home.

I noticed there is white rust, for lack of better known term, but not leakage, around the bell housing of the pump, but only around that area, and a tiny bit on fhe engine, so i never gave it much thought.

Ever since i got the car (18 months) i thought it had a bit rough sound, but lacking another one to compare, and not sound that serious, i thought not much of it.

Now, that i think of it, it does sound like bearing rolling on empty i.e. no lubrication, and since i was pretty rought on the car today, some long serpentines with 4 passenger, and constantly 3-4 rpm, i guess it got heated up, and the rubbing got even more noticeable, and turned into whine.

I'll try to get it to a garage asap.

Got the car fixed, quite faster than expected, luckily turned out to be the  water pump.

Water pump was 70 gbp, new serpentine belt 20 gbp, coolant 8 gbp, 27 gbp for 2 working hours, in total 125 gbp.

A bit hefty price for such repair for where i currently live, mostly because they overcharged 50% on belt and 100% on the pump, but it's a trusted shop, and sadly, most of them are shady around here, so atleast it should be good for quite a lot of miles.
