2008 D4d 2 litre 2nd time starter

My Avensis starts on the second turn when cold, has to rev then settles down and runs fine, starts first turn when hot (primed?) : it has always started on the first turn no matter what until recently , not the Battery and it had a new toyota engine 10k miles ago. 

Any thoughts

Do you follow the proper start up procedure? Switch ignition to on, then wait a few seconds before engaging the starter, until the initial checks are finished and the lamp test is finished and the extra lights on the dash go off. In particular, you are waiting for the glow plug lamp to light and go off. Failing that, pull the engine cover off and look at the strap rail across the top of the glow plugs, connecting them to the supply voltage. Is it in decent condition and not crapped up with debris like damp leaves which might cause a short circuit and restrict them from heating properly?
