1AD-FTV reliability

I currently have a Freelander 2 and although I really like the car I am fed up of bits failing. I wont bore you with the details but I have spent more on maintenance on it than any car I have ever owned by a very wide margin despite it having only done 70k miles.

I am looking at an Avensis estate with the 2.0 1AD-FTV engine to replace it likely a MY2012-2014 with 50-80k miles on it.

I have read a review of the engine over on Toyota club net and there seems to be an awful lot of pretty expensive common problems listed such as high oil consumption, poor EGR valves, dodgy head gaskets, faulty DPF and others. They even state that Korean diesels of this era are more reliable. I realise it is impossible for any company no matter how high their standards to have total reliability but this has worried me slightly.

I had my mind made up on the Toyota until I read this!

Any thoughts?

Thanks

The AD series engines did have issues as regards high oil consumption and head gasket failure. A small percentage of engines, were thought to be affected. These were covered by Toyota under a goodwill arrangement for a period of 7 years/111,846 miles from first registration.

However, these issues were addressed in the Avensis in models built after February 2009.

Thanks that helps put my mind at rest. All the major car websites I look at have them ranked as one of the most reliable cars available.

I have an avensis 2.0 d4d 1ad over 200000 miles still has the original clutch. I did it's 1st timing belt at 198000 miles not advisable to leave that long also cleaned egr was lucky I think but as far as everything else apart from that had no issues I think it's the 2.2 diesel that has the issues just off reading this forum but tbo every car has horror stories

You have to make your own mind up

Good luck
