Need a cheap but reliable run about and going to look at a Corolla Verso later today.

Having done some research it would seem they were afflicted by a number of problems ultimately leading to HG failure and the need for a replacement engine.

The vehicle is a 2007 and has done a touch over 100k. Would I be safe to assume that if this engine was affected it would have expired a long time ago and it is safe to buy?

Thanks

The head gasket/oil consumption issue of the AD series engine was covered under a goodwill arrangement (which has now expired for any affected vehicle) by Toyota whereby engines were rebuilt/replaced. A Toyota dealer should be able to trace whether a vehicle has had a replacement engine under the goodwill arrangement.

I have spoken to my local dealer who put me on to the main dealer that supplied the car and did services etc on it. The chap I spoke to had no idea about any of the issues the 2.2 faced and initially told me they had no history of working on the car only to then change his mind and say they had carried out 'warranty work' on the vehicle but he didn't think any of it involved the HG or engine rebuild. He wasn't particularly keen on discussing it though so I am not to sure what to do now.

It is a shame as the car looks lovely and is well priced but I obviously don't want to buy a pup even if it is a cheap runabout.

I am waiting a call back from the chap that is selling to see if he has any info on it.

Any other thoughts? Thanks

Only a small % of AD engines are believed to develop the head/head gasket issues.

Don't buy a recent diesel if you are only going to do short journeys & low annual mileage. Personally, I am a fan of not running any modern emission-equipped turbodiesel from any manufacturer out of warranty - the potential repair bills will outweigh any fuel saving.

Thanks for your input. That does make a lot of sense.
