I'm wondering if anybody has any advice how to get apps like watsapp on the multi-media screen through mirrorlink?

As far as I know it's not possible except in brand new models with Android auto compatibility

I have a Toyota Aygo 5 Door 1.0 VVT-i X-Press X-Nav 2018 Model. Mirror link is on it but doesn't seem to support Android Auto unless I'm doing something wrong.

well it's a 2019 plate although I think it might be a 2018 model. its has smartphone integration link on the screen

yes, comes up with this on screen but doesn't seem to recognise android auto

Do you have a third button with a "speech" type symbol on the  headunit?

Yes, then you have android auto/Applecar play 

No then you have a basic mirrorlink system which is only compatible with older version 1 mirrorlink devices such a Samsung GS3 or old Nokia symbian
