Head gasket woes

Hi again all,

I regularly read posts on the avensis forum.

I have 2005 2.2 D4D T Spirit. Mileage 73,000 regularly serviced annually.

I read with interest a post by mikeyc123 posted Thursday.

Have noticed for considerable time that on start up there certainly is a "sound of water behind the dashboard". I do not at the moment have any loss of coolant. Could this be a "tell tail" sign, indicative of a pending head gasket failure? Else where I read in the same article that the head gasket failure could be attributed to build up of carbon on the pistons?

Have contemplated in the past having the vehicle Terracleaned. This would hopefully clean the pistons of carbon but what could else happen as a result.

Am I worrying unnecessarily?

Peter

Hissing and gurgling noises from the heater matrix can be associated with head gasket failure.

Sloshing noises (more noticeable braking suddenly at very low speed) can simply be a little trapped air in the matrix and can be caused by nothing more serious than a little used vehicle needing a good run up to temperature and some high revs. I've also a suspicion that suddenly and vigorously squeezing the radiator hoses can introduce air into the system causing this.

Hi Molly,

Appreciate your reply. I have in the past pressed the heater switch to max. On the next start up the was an appreciable difference in sound. However, it does return return.

I've had the car for over 10 years and very happy with it. I would be very disappointed if the head gasket were to fail. Couldn't afford to repair it. It's well looked after.

Thanks again.

Peter.
