Toyota yaris squeal

My yaris (2000) has developed a sqeal in the last few months and am not sure where it's coming from. It only ever squeals when it's cold/damp, and doesn't do it so much if I let the car warm up for 10/15 minutes before going anywhere. It also only happens when I'm pulling away or changing from 1st to 2nd gear at low revs, around when I reach the bite point and will last a couple of seconds before stopping. However, if I increase the revs when pulling away, it tends not to squeal.

There haven't been any other noises and the car still drives perfectly. Does anyone have any idea what this could be?

P. S. I know nothing about cars so please dumb it down for me!

My first thought would be a fan belt or alternator belt

AS above...^^^...very likely to be a squeaky belt issue.

Agree with above. Second thought. Water pump.

OP doesn't say if the car is petrol or diesel. If the latter, the glo-plugs draw a lot of current that puts a strain on the alternator and hence the drive belt, possibly causing it to slip. This would be more likely in the Winter months.

I'd suggest the OP starts the car, then switches on the headlights and heated rear window. If this makes it squeal, then it's probably the belt. A mechanic will tighten it for a few quid.
