I love ABS. I'll never have a car without ABS ever again!

If my GT4 only had ABS i would still have it now :censor:

ABS nearly made me crash my MR2 once...

I never had it kick in before so when it did I shat and nearly forgot to take evasive action and nearly went straight into the rear of the car in front (it wasn't a toyota) :!Removed!:

Yeah it does come as a shock first time you experience it, doesn't it? I thought the car was falling apart! Works though.

You can remove ABS, but only if you think you are skilled enough to remember to on the spot cadance braking.

The size of your discs and the area in contact with the bad determine your braking force have a look for bigger discs. Sometimes manufacturers use similar parts so you might be able to upgrade your discs, hubs etc with a larger cars parts.

Other than that, bleed the brakes and refill with a quality brake fluid, add some braided lines and you will greatly improve resistance to fade and feel.

I wouldn't put drilled discs on your car, reduction of braking surface, combined with pad destroyers and cracking don't make them good for road use. Throw away track use but not road.

Grooved discs would be better, you still lose the small braking area but will dump pad debris and prevent glazing.

Easiest brake upgrades that can be done without having to modify too much would be better quality discs & pads. You should also be able to find higher spec callipers that should fit straight on. i.e your standard callipers will be 1-pot so you should be able to find a 2 or 4-pot caliper to fit straight in.

A lot of the Scooby boys will upgrade their front callipers from 2-pot to 4-pot. Brembo callipers being the first choice.

No need to over the top on the rears.

Vmail, best thing to do if your not happy with braking performance is;

1) Get Braided hoses.

2) Change your pads as mentioned to say EBC greenstuff.

You'll notice big gains doing that.

If you want to keep going:

3) Change your discs.

4) Get the best road tyres money can buy - they will make the best overall difference.

ABS is a safety feature designed to reduce the chance of skidding - it does not necessarily reduce stopping distances - in many many cases, your distances are increased over a non abs car - but the idea is that abs allows you to control your skid maybe even allowing cornering potential to avoid a hazard.

As stated, if you've removed the fuse, get it all checked out, brakes are the most important thing to me about my bike and car...

So, if your after SHORT STOPPING DISTANCES - get the upgrades for your tyres, discs, pads etc.

If your after more chance of controlling a skid, get better tyres, pads and KEEP abs.

Hope this helps!

Adam

Are you sure about that??

A locked wheel isn’t a griping wheel so your overall stopping distance will increase unless you use threshold braking.

ABS is the electronic/automatic version of cadence braking and requires no skill or experience.

Very sure, i actually prefer also driving cars without abs, same with bikes (although it only has to kick in once to justify its existance and cost on bikes!).

Im not talking about locking the wheel, im talking about controlled braking versus abs braking. Clearly a locked wheel is what abs is trying to avoid, and locking wheels increases distances. I didnt make that clear so apologies!

No problem Titto, now it makes sense!

If we are on the same lines do you mean Threshold Braking?

This is when you apply the brakes using full force so having maximum braking efficiency and maintaining control just to the point of locking up.

Due to my occupation, I have recently done a re-cert skid day with the Police, aim for the cone at 30mph and on the signal, brake and avoid the obstacle (pedestrian/child) with and without ABS.......fun!

Without a doubt, as mentioned by other people, I wouldn’t have a car now without ABS fitted.

like it! I train on them also for a living !!! Cant beat skid panning...

I first learned to control a car on ...wait for it....

Skid pan flooded with diesel, then flooded with water, then a Ford Sierra Cosworth with bald tyres!!! ahhh, those were the days!

I specifically bought my bike without the abs option because you can 'feel' more of what is happening with the bike and the contact with the road. Whilst its not as true with cars, the principal is the same. Im still mixed in my mind about abs - some love it, some loath it...i just dont like control being taken away from me in / on a vehicle!

Pity you can’t override it like traction control, but for me personally, I wouldn’t be without it.

can you add traction control to a car that doesnt have it?

The silly thing is "upgrading your brakes" will only do so much ..

Where is all the grip to help you stop coming from? Your tyres ..

On a car you can have the biggest brakes possible .. they'll only be as effective as your tyres ..

Yes, the best bet is getting something like the racelogic system..

Its a very good traction control system, although, no offence, i think its use will be limited on a 1.3 Yaris...
