Avensis Tourer Parcel Shelf / Load Cover Broken

Hi guys - I have a 2007 Avensis Tourer T180. The parcel shelf / load cover in the back doesn't work because both pegs / pins on each side are missing. I've looked on eBay and they sell the whole shelf, which I don't need (costs £80). Anyone can share their experience with this (if any)?

I've searched a lot on forums and found 1 topic that dealt with the same issue, yet it had no definitive answer other than "someone fixed it on here by using dowels"; I'm unsure how the dowels would work.

Please see pictures attached. Someone is actually selling these pegs but at £40 it's a daylight robbery!

Thanks in advance.

Hi Denis, welcome to TOC 🙂

From my days of having a T25 estate iirc this was actually a common issue e.g.

(& the cost of a new tonneau from Toyota is considerably more than £80!). I took mine to a local car upholstery specialist who fixed it (sadly can't remember exactly how though).

Thanks pal. That's the post I was referring to lol. Okay, I guess I'll need to find someone around my area who can sort this out. Yep, the ones on eBay are second hand and cost a fortune!

Just for reference, I went to B&Q and bought some metal plates that fits nicely on either side of the parcel shelf. £2 for two. Works like a charm but you've got to duct tape it a bit so that it doesn't damage your plastic inserts.

I used a piece of wooden dowel, and before cutting it to length, carefully drilled a smaller then a larger hole along its centre, the hole just big enough to accommodate a long suitable countersunk woodscrew. I then carefully countersunk the end, and cut the length to replace the broken /missing plastic bit.

Again very carefully, inserted the screw through the countersunk end and ensured it went all the way through the dowel to the countersink without splitting it. Then I slowly brought the screw all the way into the aluminium strip edge of the tonneau cover, where the plastic clip used to be, ensuring not to screw it too far and risk splitting the dowel.

The finishing touch was to wrap the dowel round with a couple of wraps of black gorilla tape and trim to fit. Voila!

Repeat for the other side if required.

And ready to do it again whenever it can no longer take the strain, as its a pretty tensioned item.
