TPMS - Which year did it start?

Hi All, thinking about changing my 2010 SR to the newer Sport model. Looking at 2013/14 model years but wanted to know if the TPMS was standard on the first models or was it introduced in 2014+ cars only (new legislation I think). I will be changing to winter wheels regularly and wanted to avoid the hassle of the built-in tyre monitoring system. Thanks.

Not a straightforward question.

TPMS became a mandatory requirement for vehicles with new Type Approval from 1st November 2012, and later became mandatory for all new vehicles from 1st November 2014.

The second generation Auris (December 2012 to 2019), as it was a re-worked first generation, carried forward the Type Approval from 2007, and thus wasn't legally required to have TPMS until 1st November 2014.

I think that TPMS may have been introduced with the May 2014 update.

Thanks FrostyBalls. I've been looking at the specs on Autotrader, and it seems under the 'Safety' tab only post 2015 cars show "Tyre Pressure Warning System (TPWS)". Does the warning symbol light up on the dash when ignition is activated? Or is there any other signs that show the car will have the TPWS fitted?

The TPMS light doesn't on my Aygo, which has an indirect system that doesn't use sensors in each wheel.

Think the Auris would have a direct system which does have sensors in each wheel. On our i20, the tyre valves look different (bit larger), so that may be the same on the Auris.

if the car has a direct tpms fitted have alook at the tyre valves

as they have a nut on the rim holding the sensor in place.

I change the wheels+tyres on my Avensis over the Winter but didn't want the expense of 4 extra TPMS sensors for my Winter wheels - running without TPMS isn't a problem although a warning light shows. Of course it helps that once it reaches MOTable age it will be due in the summer when it will be on wheels with TPMS anyway (tbh by then I may well be running all year round on Michelin CrossClimate + or similar).
