Toyota Yaris 04 P1346 code

Hi all, my partner has a Toyota Yaris 04 which has done 72k miles.

She initially took her car for an MOT which failed due to the engine management light not coming on when you start the engine. She took it to a garage who said there was no bulb and they put one in. The light then wouldn't go out so they put in a code reader which came back with P1346 means " VVT Sensor /Camshaft Position Sensor Circuit Range/ Performance Problem (Bank 1)", code was deleted and the light went out for 5mins and then it returned.

My partner then called roadside assistance the next day while at work and they did the same thing as the garage, deleted the code and the light went out for a short period and then returned. Roadside said if the car is running fine and if there was an engine problem it would have shown up in the emissions test which did pass on its MOT. Unfortunately the car still wont pass its MOT due the engine management light not going out. I have also been told the car has struggled to start up recently.

We got told it could be anything upto £500 to fix the issue which isn't worth it if that's the case. I was hoping to get advice on how much anyone would think it would be to change the sensor and is this the likely issue?

I presume she bought it with a current MOT recently? If so she may have some comeback against whoever sold it, as they may have mis-represented it  in the advert if the bulb had been removed.

This may be a stretched cam chain problem, or, if you're lucky, a faulty sensor. You could try swapping the cam and crank position sensors, as in my reply.

Do you know its service history?

She has had the car for 3 years and not had a service in that time however many times I have said how important it is. It's always passed its MOT but this year with the new rules regarding lights it failed on the MOT, I dont know how long the light hasn't been coming on for as I dont drive the vehicle, we was just alerted after the MOT fail.

I'll try and see if I can change the sensors and if we get lucky, if not I dont think getting the chain replaced is worthwhile, does anyone know the likelyhood of one breaking completely?
