When starting the engine in the morning, the RPMs go up to 2000 and oscillate between 1000 and 2000 for a while. A local mechanic was not able to fix this... Any idea?

thanks!

On a cold start it will rev close to 2000rpm and gradually fall as coolant temperature rises.  It settles to around 750rpm on a hot engine but will increase rpm somewhat if the A/C or a large electrical load is switched on.

If the rpm fluctuate wildly then clean the Idle Air Control Valve.  Sustained unstable/fast idling can be caused by a leaking inlet manifold gasket. Very easy to replace.  There is an upgraded gasket available from Toyota.

This is normal happens everyday, should go down after a few minutes. I know it is a little noisy but you get used to it.
