Finding Engine Age

Lo all,

Ive a friend who recently posted this on another forum, can you help him??

I have a 93 ST182 GTR Celica which shortly after I bought it had a big end go in a big way, I sourced a replacement engine from Fensport who told me it was from a 91 GTR ( the ht leads that came with the engine also had 91 printed on them ) So I have a 93 car with a 91 engine in it which according to the online MOT manual ( UK ) doesn’t have to have a cat to pass MOT ( goes on age of engine not car ) but it is up to me to prove the age of the engine before they will test it as a 91 car. How would I go about proving the age of it ? The main reason is that the cat of the car is knackered ( broke up ) and I don’t really fancy paying £350 for a replacement cat, if I can just prove the age of the engine that’s in the car then I wont need a cat at all

Thanks in advance

James

Its an import btw

The block serial number is 3S 1490493

Any advice gratefully received :)

Sorry I couldnt be more help

Yeah I think you are right. If you run a pre 1973 car you dont pay any road tax but most cars that old are unreliable. However you can fit modern engines and such to make it reliable and not have to bother with a cat as the emissions are based on the age of the car. I think thats how a lot of the kit car people manage it too.

Simple case of if fensport tell you its a 91 engine just get them to provide you with a written confirmation of this to take to the MOT centre.

If there are any issues in the future then reffer them back to fensport as the engine came from them.
