Can anyone advise why the hydraulic system which opens the boot lid only goes half way? My beautiful Corolla is 15 years old and immaculate, but is there any way of fixing this problem so I dont bang my head every time I go in the boot???

Do the tailgate struts need replacing.

Hi.

Like Frostyballs has commented on is about the tailgate gas struts.

Can you disconnect each one and see if the tailgate is any different as if you disconnect one and the boot (Tailgate) is the same it means that one has lost it's gas and needs replacing.

Regards, Mike.

Hi,

Recently had the same problem, checked the hinges were oiled/free to move ok.

You can of course buy a new pair from Toyota,  but I used some eBay cheapies, they work but sometimes seems a little slow about mid way.

It is a simplish diy job if you first see how they are held in by the little steel clip etc.  but do replace as a pair, as they will both be well worn.

Be warned, once one or both struts are disconnected the boot is very heavy , so ensure its supported before disconnecting a strut.

Some suppliers seem to be a half way house , saying theres are British  made.

Do not be tempted to lubricate your strut pistons with WD-40 as I did.  It just lets all the gas out and they stop working altogether.  So I replaced my struts with ones from sgs-engineering (as recommended by olcodger above) and they work fine.

Mine just gets stuck at whatever position i leave it in.

When it's really hot, it opens all the way by itself, while i stare at it full of joy like some child.
