56 plate Avensis automatic "stalling"

Very, very occasionally my 56 plate Avensis T Spirit automatic will apparently stall and the engine cut out (in Drive). It will restart very easily, but as an automatic I'm surprised this happens at all. It usually happens at low speed at a road junction when I am obliged due to traffic to stop. I have a feeling but not too sure it is more likely to happen in very warm or hot weather conditions, but that may not be a clue.

Have any other owners of Avensis automatics experienced this problem and suggest a fix.

Hi,

As far as I know there are only two engines fitted in Avensis automatics 1998cc 1AZ-FE or 1AZ-FSE. Or at least that is what the handbook shows. I don't know what the significance of the "S" is, is it important?

Maybe I should point out the auto gearbox is of the "proper" sequential type not the CVT type, should this be important.

As it happens I also had (at the same time) the slightly earlier 05 plate same car. That also exhibited the same "fault". But I disposed of the car before having the fault rectified. Both showed the fault as they exceeded 90.000 miles.

Ok, so its the 2 litre with 1AZ engine and U241E transmission.  In which case the most likely causes of stalling are:

1. Dirty throttle body.

2. Defective or contaminated Idle Air Control Valve.

3. Maladjusted or faulty Throttle Position Sensor.

The best place to start would be a thorough cleaning of throttle body, IACV.

Thank you mrfixer,

Would a dirty throttle body be user accessible with a brush or an air-line. Or a sealed unit and much more difficult to get at?

Many thanks

You can use carb cleaner and a brush and airline in-situ.   might be worth changing the PCV.
