Just driven home from work & on way heard a rather nasty rattle when accelerating (84 Starlet 4k) runs sweet as a nut on tick over & when driving normally, but driven hardish, really nasty rattle, think its from the top end, have checked tappets & they're all fine. Anyone got any idea's what it could be as I'm baffled, or just stupid.... :P

Thanks in advance,

Dave

Might sound daft, but have you checked all of the exhaust mountings are fine, usually if a bracket is broken it tends to make the exhaust vibrate when accelerating.

I wish it was, sure its engine, seems worse when foot put to the floor, can't really hear i when only halfway down, also what sounds like tappit rattling when coming back to tick over after higher revs. All seems odd to me when runs so sweet & doesn't smoke in the slightest. Not sure how many miles its done though as its not the original engine

Sounds to me like 'pinking'! Check your plugs/points/dizy cap etc and then check your timing! Also try some fuel additive with some optimax!

like james said, on my 84 starlet its really low and the exhaust rattles off the diff casing only on full throttle amd sound very much like what your describing. just an idea

Thanks for the idea's guys, think I've managed to find it-timing chain rattling like hell so got a new one on order see if that shuts it up, still goes well enough so not really that worried... yet ;)
