Offered new Rav 4 ahead of changes to Diesel legislation

Hi, Toyota called me last week to say UK govt had asked them to contact all diesel car owners to try and help them out of diesel cars into petrol/hybrid etc...

offered me a newer Rav 4 which is petrol, costs more and have to pay new deposit.

my model is sept 2015 awd manual and I thought that would be Euro 6 compliant.

anyone else been contacted by Toyota like this? And does anyone  know if 2015 model would be Euro 6 compliant?

Was it Toyota or, more likely, the dealer??

Does it have the Toyota diesel engine or the BMW diesel engine?

Yes the dealer...I suspect they want to resell it now before it loses value and obviously they tie me in for another 4 years. They said they’re doing it to help me out of a car that’ll end up costing me more but I think (not 100%) that mine might just be ok on emissions etc...

I think it’s a Toyota engine, just looked inside and all says Toyota on it

Euro 6 starts from September 2015.

Meaning, models produced on Sept 2015 and onwards should be compatible with Euro 6, but an August 2015 need not be.

It could be that Toyota was already compatible

Try to get confirmation of production date from them.

 

Which engine exactly do you have in your car? 

2012-2018 Rav4 came with these diesel options, check your paperwork for details

It's just a salesman trying it on! The government haven't told them to contact anyone.

Try popping your registration number into this Euro emissions standard check site. This should tell which standard your car meets. You can also look at your V5C to see what your certified emissions are.

Beyond that, I not aware of any legislation that suggests that we should ditch perfectly sound diesel cars in favour of something else either now or in the near future. As above (Nick), it's just a salesman "trying it on".

If you fancy a new car, why not have one - but try to find a dealership that's a little more 'honest' perhaps ... 😉

I'd be tempted to capitalise on that salesman and call him back. Record the conversation, obviously advise them this is being done and push them to commit. I think they won't but you never know... Push transcript or recording direct to Toyota GB as an example of sharp practice that should be stamped out. You may end up with a better offer!! 

There really is no place for sharp practice like this playing on people's perceptions of diesel woes.

Unless you regularly drive into the London ULEZ or are intending using the car as a minicab in the future I wouldn't worry. All of the Uber drivers in Manchester in their Euro 5 Avensis diesels don't seem too concerned yet in my experience! 

Some regional UK cities are currently considering introducing low emission zones but most are a few years away and many will only apply to commercial vehicles and taxis initially. Also the majority of them have not even set the minimum emissions standard which will apply yet. It might be Euro 6, or Euro 5, or Euro 4..Other than that there are no planned changes to legislation on diesel engines. 

Car salesman tell you whatever they think it will take to get you to buy a car from them.

Glasgow's city centre LEZ is already operational although it is being phased in  to be fully in place by 2022. Requirements will be:

• Euro 3 for motorcycles and mopeds
• Euro 4 for petrol cars, vans, minibuses and other specialist vehicles
• Euro 6 for diesel cars, vans and minibuses and other specialist vehicles
• Euro VI for lorries, buses and coaches and other specialist heavy diesel engine vehicles

(don't ask me why there is both Euro 6 & Euro VI ....)

Both the Clean Air Zone (CAZ) for Leeds and Sheffield target HGV's, LGV's, buses, coaches, and taxis/private hire vehicles, rather than private cars. So currently in Yorkshire, private vehicles won't be affected. The Leeds CAZ has been postponed from being introduced in January 2020 due to the Government's vehicle checker not being ready. Sheffield's CAZ is due in 2021.

So unless you travel to another Region, there is currently no low emissions area that will affect you in the short to medium term.

It will say Toyota on the engine. For example the Ford engine used in a Mazda 2 (built by Ford in Spain) we had previously, had Mazda on the engine.

As I understand, from the data published by the DVLA, as of August 2015 Toyota did not have any Euro 6 compliant variants of the RAV4 available. What they did have were the following Euro 5 compliant diesel options:

• 2.0 D-4D manual in AWD and FWD - this had a displacement of 1998cc and, I believe, is a Toyota engine developed by Toyota
• 2.2 D-4D / D-CAT AWD manual / automatic - Toyota never produced a Euro 6 compliant version of the 2.2 diesel (they simply dropped it)

For the 2016 model year (thus on sale from September 2015) they introduced the following Euro 6 compliant diesel

• 2.0 D-4D manual, FWD only - this had a displacement of 1995cc and, I believe, is derived from the alliance with BMW. So despite having a Toyota Badge and the 'normal' D-4D designation is quite different from the earlier Euro 5 compliant D-4D

So, if Natalie's car, registered in September 2015, is AWD as suggested, then I suspect that it must be one of the earlier Euro 5 compliant models ...
