Rumours!

So you are saying that all that power could have come in at 4000 rpm instead of 6400 rpm. Thats a dam shame as could you imagine the looks on peoples faces when you are going down the road and wham you are at 4000 rpm. All that power coming in so early :D

ppl lot smarter than I have discussed this issue (remember that 2zz-ge has been around for years) - lift coming in earlier than 6k, and decided that it would simply not gain anything - since at lower revs, benefits of lift would go away... this is why nobody builds mods that will let the engine go into lift earlier...

besides, extra 5-10 hp would hardly distort body Shell, would it now? ;-)

just to make sure you understand - when lift kicks in at 6,200 RPM (between 6,000 and 6,200 depending on conditions), we get extra 10 hp at that point... hence me saying that 10 hp cant distort a body Shell...

only way you can get more HP from that engine is to remap it to go into higher revs... which makes it much less reliable and hence nobody is doing it

all these rumours are kind of funny since most of them are simply not possible - and many people get hooked, like that thread about ECU remap for 230 HP, which we never heard of again ;-)

now, i would certainly welcome a rumour that someone developed inexpensive AND RELIABLE S/C kit that will up the torque by 40% in the lower revs and HP by 20%... all I really would ever need ;-)

I'm surprised that switching to the higher cam causes problems with the bodyshell, but

it is noticeable that the Corolla isn't that stiff. The dash does creak a bit if you hit a deep

pothole in the road.

I think the reason that the engine switches to the higher cam at 6200 is that this gives

just enough of a band to enable you to keep the revs there as you change up through

the gears. Obviously mindful of keeping the good reliability record, the engineers have

given us just enough but no more :)

Of course, you do have to wait a moment to get to 30mph where it kicks in, but your tyres

will thank you for it ;)

Cheers

Paul.

so its only 10 hp extra ? ...surely its more ... ive read on other forums its 50hp

when the lift kicks in at 6,200 rpm, you get extra 10 hp... now, compared to the similar 1.8 VVT-i engine, max HP is 50 hp higher, but thats at 8,000 rpm of course ;-)

thats why body distortion story is kind of funny... especially since lift has the most benefits at higher rpms, it is not really even clear if you would gain anything at only 4k rpm... kind of interesting that body Shell could distort after only 7% increase in engine power

;-)

Yesterday I talked to a guy in one of the Toyota dealershps in Poland. He said on the 10th of April they have a meeting in Toyota Motor Poland and they'll be talking about future availability of ECU remaps for TS. He said, he's quite sure that the remaps for TS will be available in Poland by the end of September. He doesn't know though if its gonna be this famous 230 hp remap or different. It will cost about 500 euros and will not void warranty. Hope this is not just another rumour.

  • 2 weeks later...

In a greek magazine it was written that on a measurement on a rolling-road they saw a +55 hp increase

when the revs passed the 6200..i dont think that there are only 10hp.... This kick gives you a sense like Turbo

i doubt it i'm running 300 bhp and 300+lbft of torque in an ae-92 thats twice the power the Shell was designed for and i havent noticed any probs with distorted chassis or any thing like that so i doubt that the new corolla with its even stiffer chassis would flex that much from say an extra 40hp. adrian at fensport runs 400bhp in the japaneese version the runx same car just 4wd :D
