Mk1 distributor problem

Hi , I took out my distributor without setting tdc, when I tried to put it back in correct position it won’t go plus I could feel something in the hole , pic below... anyone have this problem before or what could this be

You shouldn't have to set TDC before removing the distributor.   Why did you remove it?  Have you got any other pictures, as I would like to see more.

Hi , I removed it because It would not idle so I wanted to check , since been informed it’s a shim from valve that has dropped 😩 will have to remove valve cover to investigate more

It's certainly the right size and shape to be a valve shim and if it is, then you have a lot more to worry about than the engine not idling.

I'm curious to know how the shim found it's way there. Have you got anymore pictures as I'd like to see the layout of the engine?

Next stage is to remove the cam covers, turn the engine with your hands or a big spanner and observe to see if the valves are operating as they should.
