2007 Diesel RAV4 smoke from fuse box

Hi. Driving home from short journey my wife noticed lots of smoke from engine bay right hand side. Stopped immediately and called fire brigade it was that bad. By the time they arrived the smoking had stopped but there was a smell of electrical burning and the bonnet area over the fuse box was very warm. The car has been recovered and theres nothing obvious to show any burning in or around the fuse box area however it still smells. When you turn the key it all looks like it's going to be OK but haven't dared to turn it as far as to start the engine for fear of causing more damage. Any advice on what to do would be greatly appreciated. Could it just be that a fuse has spectacularly blown?

Remove each fuse in turn and test; check for signs of overheat, e.g. discolouration of the metal contacts.
