12V Supply socket live with ignition off ?

I want to use a solar panel to charge my iQ Battery as i leave it not driven for long periods of time. Question can i charge through the 12v socket or do i need to connect directly to the Battery ? You can also by OBD adapters for charging direct to the car ? Help please.
