Battery replacement issue Avensis 2014

My Avensis has been standing for 10 weeks and the Battery was flat. Took it off to recharge but didn't charge up. So purchased a new Battery. Fitted this positive terminal first then negative. As soon as the negative was put on the alarm went off. The remote key fob won't open the doors or turn off the alarm. I can unlock and lock the drivers door with the key but the alarm is still going. I have put the key in the ignition and turned to start, all the lights light up as they should but the engine won't turn over and the alarm is still going. I have tried removing the horn fuse (so I can hear myself think) but I can't get A) the alarm to stop or B) the car to start.
I have even put a new Battery in the key fob, but still to no avail.

This is driving me mad. I would appreciate anyones help with this.

You could try disconnecting the Battery a second time. Reconnect with the door open and the key in the ignition, but not on. It sounds like the body computer isn't seeing a correct immobiliser chip in the key. See if the security light goes out when the key is in. In my 2008 the security light is centre dashboard above the satnav and combined into the passenger airbag warning.

  1. Thanks Paul, i'll try. The Battery is currently disconnected anyway because the alarm keeps going off.

Locking/unlock the doors with the physical key should silence the alarm, which in your case does not happen.

If there was issue with immobilizer chip, the car would still crank, but just not start, since this is not happening, it's probably caused by alarm.ta

Is the alarm fitted by Toyota, or some 3rd party?   I would check if there is some way to reset it.

Also, you can search the forum for registering the fob to the car agian, so it would lock/unlock.

Furtula, correct it doesn't.

It's a factory Toyota alarm and I can't find anyway to reset it. I can't even find the fuse for it. It's not listed in the manual.

Will search for re-registering the key and give that a go.

Thanks.

Lucky for you, this info is freely available from Toyota's website on https://www.toyota-tech.eu/Aim/Aim.aspx

Check this troubleshooting manual below for the alarm. But do check out the link above, and maybe there will be something related to the key aswell.

This is the installation for your allarm (there are 2 links but both are LHD, look more or less same to me), so you can see where the control box is, and the wires.

Similar issue like yours, but on older gen corolla, same symptoms tho

Did what you suggested Paul, but still the same issue. The security light is on and doesn't extinguish when key in the ignition.

I'm seriously thinking its the key which has lost it's memory to the car.

Worst thing is it's not even my car. I'm trying to help out an elderly neighbour who's wife passed away a few months ago. He doesn't drive and is going to be selling it. But can't at the minute because of these issues.

Why don't you try the spare key?

Thanks for this info. However you can't do anything to the alarm unless it's in it's deactivated state. That's what I can't get too.

How about this..put back in the old Battery. Then connect the new Battery too it with jump leads and see what happens. The cars ecu isnt recgonising the new Battery i reckon. Of course i could be wrong but its worth a try

If the security light is staying on with both keys, then you are quite likely looking at a bad alarm module or pickup at the ignition switch. Make sure that you have re-synchronised at least the key you are using, as manual unlocking will not reset the alarm. The security light should flash about every two seconds with the key removed and go out if it sees the immobiliser chip. As Furtula said, the car should still crank even without seeing the immobiliser chip, but not start. That could be a symptom or a separate problem. Maybe a flat or a bad Battery? Even though it is new, that can still be the case. If the key is synchronised and will remotely lock and unlock the car, then the alarm staying on would point towards the security module or maybe a too low supply from the Battery. If the car was cranking, then I would suspect that you needed to reprogramme the immobiliser chip to the car, I think this involves an large amount of putting the key in and removing it and some other things to be done, but that is likely to have changed over time from when my car was built to your car.
