RAV4 Hybrid 2017 12v battery drain

Hi, bit of a newbie here looking for help with our 2017 RAV4 Hybrid.

Emigrated from the UK about 18 months ago with our RAV4 and have recently had problems with the 12v Battery draining. If the car isn’t used for about 24 hours we’re unable to start it and it needs to be jumped. Works fine once jumped, but doing it once or twice a week is getting old fast.

We've had the Battery replaced but that’s made no difference so there’s definitely something funny going on.

At the time this started happening, the Touch 2 Go system seems to have reset itself - we no longer have the SatNav or online apps. I tried a software update but the USB ports seem to have stopped working completely, which makes me suspect this unit, given from what I’ve read the SatNav etc is an extra unit bolted on to the USB port of the head unit...?

However... I have no idea how to troubleshoot this and there isn’t really a local service station. I can order parts in but I’ll be doing the labour myself. Nothing like learning by doing, so any suggestions would be much appreciated.

You need to monitor the quiescent current being drawn from the Battery. Measure it about 1 hour after turning off the car. If the current drawn is greater than about 50mA (0.050A) then it is excessive.  Monitor the current and pull fuses one at a time until the current drops to below 50mA. You have then identified the problem circuit and can investigate further. Any aftermarket accessories should be prime suspects, as are boot light/ glove box light etc.

To measure current drain without disconnecting the Battery buy a cheap current clamp which can measure DC current...  like this Amazon item "Digital Clamp Meter TRMS Auto Ranging 5999 Counts Multimeter with Alligator Clip Batteries And Bag Multi Tester with Light for Voltage Current Resistance Capacitance Frequency Temperature Diode Test"

Thanks for the advice - have ordered (takes a week or two for things to get here) so hopefully can get to the bottom of the issue. Thanks once again!

Did you ever resolve this problem? Having the same thing with our 2018 rav4 hybrid. Been in to the dealer twice and they’ve tested the Battery and said it’s fine
