2008 auris 1.4 petrol slow to fire up

Hi All,

I bought a 2008 1.4 vvti Auris petrol 2 months ago.

The car drives fine,but i dont get good pick up when i floor the accelerator.

My mechanic serviced the car changed plugs etc.

One fault i do not like,the car is slow to fire up hot or cold.

I have to allow the engine turn over a few times before it fires.

I have never had this issue with any other car.

Once the Auris fires up its fine,but as i said i find the engine lazy on pick up.

Could be a tiring Battery, so it cranks slower.

Auris is heavy, and optimized for fuel savings, so you don't get much of an oomph.

Even mine 1.6 91kw is pretty lazy. One thing i noticed, if you drive for a few seconds in higher rpm's, for example 3200, and floor it, you get much better pull than if you would for example just normally accelerate and floor it from 3200. I guess they programmed the ECU like that.

Then again i get 47 mpg on rural roads, and the city is 40-43, so not too bad.

Well the car does have a new Battery fitted,its a "lion" make.so maybe it is acheap Battery that doesnt give enough power to start the car from initial turn.

i just checked the new Battery fitted.It is rated at 60AH.

I think this should be stong enough to fire up the engine.

Asi stated its just slow to "fire"

I have a 2006 fiat punto and the second you touch the key it fires up,so different to the Auris.

The Auris starts up like a big old bus,needs lots of cranking before she fires!

didnt expect this from a toyota.

check the Battery connections are tight and clean

and do the same for the 3 main earths

Battery - body

Battery - engine

body - engine

if these are all good you may have a lazy / tired starter motor and could possibly be in need of a new one

you could remove it and give it a good clean,check the carbon brush length and give the commutator a polish up ,

you have to remember your car is 11 years old now and if its the original starter then you haven't done badly with it

some times you can remove the cap from the end of the solenoid

if this is possible you can then give the contacts in there a clean up

if the contacts are corroded / pitted from use the power wont flow through

as it should .

you can test it off the car if you have a spare Battery by connecting the

body of the solenoid to the Battery negative and the small connector

being connected to the posiitve on the Battery, you will then hear

the solenoid engage at this point check across the 2 large battery terminals

with a multimeter and check the resisitance you would want this close to zero,

the lower the reading the better the connection with zero being optimum.

Starting slow , maybe it’s not an electrical issue, sounds  like air/fuel mixture, fuel filter, air filter inspection and change if necessary petrol canister check and fuel pipes. Petrol filters are most common fault and you have exactly same symptoms, I don’t know about your particular model but many makes and models since early 2000 have build in petrol filters into fuel pump holder which is located in the fuel tank, many people neglected those components as manufacturers do not officially recommend change but after 100-150k miles or ever 10 years time those filters get clogged and can cause that problems. Here is a filter taken of Mitsubishi Lancer that has done just over 100k miles.
