Yaris servicing

My wife has a Yaris and this month/year she has had the servicing done by an independent garage, who we have known for many years. Up until this service she has used the dealer which supplied the car.

My question is, can anyone tell me what the situation is regarding the 'Hybrid Health Check', I'm not sure that this crossed her mind when she decided to go 'independent''.I'm pretty sure that the car came with a 5 year warranty, will this be affected at all by the change?

Any thoughts or advice anyone please?

Many thanks.

Well, the car at this point has missed the chance of having a Hybrid Battery Health check.  This can still be done but at a cost - which I think is either £45 or £49 pound. Whether this negates the warranty on the Hybrid Battery I don't know

When the car is over 5 years old most Toyota garages offer a 20% discount on servicing, and the Hybrid Battery Health Check is usually included free with the service and extends its warranty by 12 months.  And MOT, at my Toyota dealer, is very competitive at £45.

Where your wifes car now stands, as I see it,.... there is nothing wrong with having a service done at an independent garage even form the first service. However, if something goes wrong with the car it is up to the owner then to prove to Toyota that their servicing standards have been met by the independent, and that will include the replaced parts. For servicing that will mean oil and oil filter, air filter, brake pads etc etc. To be clear, the onus will be on YOU to prove the independent has used approved procedures and goods.

Obviously the hassle has to be weighed against potential savings (if any).  Something to seriously think about.

Toyota seem to have re-aligned the hybrid health check - now amalgamated with the service and called the Hybrid Electric Service.

As the last service has been done outside of the Toyota dealer network, the five year/100,000 new car warranty shouldn't be affected unless there is a future warranty claim which is dependent on the correct servicing being done - and the onus will be on the owner to prove the car has been serviced correctly.

Further down the line once the car is outside the new car warranty, if you ask for the manufacturer's help with a repair under goodwill, goodwill may be refused. Goodwill works both ways.

Once outside the new car warranty, the hybrid electric service can extend the hybrid Battery warranty for 1 year/10,000 miles. Unlike the hybrid health check, not sure whether one can now have the car serviced by an independent and pay for the equivalent of the hybrid health check.

Mind you not every independent can work on Hybrids due to the safety measures needed for working with high voltage.

That is incorrect, anyone can work on a hybrid as long as the ignition is off or the 12v Battery is disconnected the contactor is not engaged, Toyota even issue guidance for working on hybrids

The service items are no different to any other car unless you have to realign the electrons with the flux capacitor

That does ideally require specialist equipment which only Toyota posess.😎 In reality, though, they don't often misalign themselves.

Iirc there is a service mode for hybrids via TS or windows based program, I think the lack of information is the issue, even the emergency services are unaware of how to disable packs in the event of an accident

If you want a light read 😉 - https://www.toyota-tech.eu/HybridInfo.aspx?Cat=HVDM

Err the high voltage system contains capacitors. If these discharge through your body, you can die.

You MUST wear conducting gloves to ensure if you make a mistake you don't put a high voltage through your body to earth..And working on the hybrid electronics really requires some training in hybrid electronics..  (Car Mechanics had an article recently on it)

tbh you shouldn't touch the HV system with performing service items

If you're removing a pack or inverter that's another issue, first thing you disconnect the 12v Battery then pull the service link then the pack is "safe" as the pack is disconnected and the contactors are disabled

I have worked with high voltage and current in the past so i know the risks

Please tell me where these capacitors are in the HV system ? " unless you have to realign the electrons with the flux capacitor" this is called humour
