2.4 hybrid vs 2.4 petrol MPG?

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone,

does anyone have experience with Estima 2.4 hybrid vs Estima 2.4 Petrol?

i was considering buying an estima Hyvrid however there is an estima aeras 2.4 petrol at an attractive price and the seller promises that the MPG’s of both cars are the same but I’m finding this hard to believe?

2.4 hybrids are 4 wheel drive and 5 speed.

2.4 petrol I’m considering is 2 wheel drive.

please help!

No idea..never had a hybrid....but my gut feeling would be there won't be that much between them..depends on your mileage/distances and just how critical mpg is to you.?

There is not that much difference between the 3 litre V6 Estima and the 2.4 for instance..maybe a few mpg..but not enough to concern me (I have the V6)..I would suspect the hybrid versus the 2.4 petrol is the same.

There are members here that have hybrids so I'm sure they'll be along to give you more informed opinions.

i was going to buy Toyota estima hybrid but i went to my local Toyota dealer and they said that they would not touch it as it was a import. so i got 2.4 petrol. unless you know a independent garage that will look after it.

Hello Paul, hope you like the Estima?I have a 2.4 petrol Esti and love it. What part of Suffolk are you? I use a local garage to me and I'm on the Suffolk  Colchester border if your not to far.

Hi tony i live in Ipswich this is my 2 estima the first 0ne was a 1994 which i had for 13 years and sold it to a friend who lives around the from me. I'm loving my new one.

Hello Paul, yes had mine under sealed wrote about it on the forum. Ipswich is a bit far to travel. Isn't there a good local garage to you as the Estima is virtually the same as a Previa. My local garages scanner wouldn't read the codes on mine so I purchased a scanner. There's another thread on here about that on here.

Not necessarily...it can happen but it often points to a less than perfect oil change regime in the past perhaps.?

I've run vvti engines for several years now and never had an oil usage issue...my current V6 never needs to be topped up between services.. I change the oil every 5/6000k miles...you are right to keep an eye on it and check it regularly.

it had a oil change when i got it last year.  i was going to change oil next year what can i do to stop it using oil. it losing about 1/4 of oil about 500 miles.

Nothing.....just make regular checks and top ups when required.

The vvti likes regular/frequent oil changes...it may not have had those previously.

What mileage has the car done.?

Posted

it has done 56000 miles what oil should i use. i normally use Castrol magnate.

Posted

Not a lot of miles then...I assume the vehicle is using oil and not losing it.? (ie a leak)

I always use 5w/30 fully synthetic...and change oil/filter every 5/6k miles.

Posted

no it's not losing oil. when i do a oil change I'm going to use bg109 engine carbon clean. which should sort the problem.

I use the same oil as Neil, the engines never used a drop of oil. Oil and filter change every 5000 miles or there abouts.

Hi I am considering a hybrid VS petrol Estima 2.4 now. There is a huge price difference when it comes to both. Is it worth buying these used hybrids from Japan or is it safe to stick to Petrol

Personally I'd stick with petrol...can't see much benefit of the "mild" hybrid in an Estima tbh.(and there is less to go wrong with the pure petrol engine)...but no doubt there are others that would disagree.

Whatever you decide...good luck.

I'd tend to agree; From what I can see there is almost no advantage to the hybrid one unless you really need the AWD one - The mpg advantage is minimal and it's a lot heavier.

The biggest advantage of the petrol one is anyone can service it, whereas there are not many people who can service the hybrid as Toyota dealers generally won't touch it (Not that it goes wrong, but if it needed any work it'd become a bit of a challenge finding someone to do it!). Most people just service the hybrid as a petrol, just check and change the normal things, e.g. oil changes, but no checking of the health of the hybrid system.

IMHO, assuming you don't have any big hangups about mpg (In which case the Prius+ would be a better choice!), the 3L V6 seems to be the nicest one; The extra power makes it nicer to drive than the 2.4s, which are a bit sluggish, but it is thirstier!

Since based on your profile, you're not in / live outside London you will not be bothered by the ULEZ, so I agree with the comments above.

I bought the hybrid because I live in London and needed a vehicle to move myself and family around without having to fork out 12.50 ULEZ charge each time I so much as moved the car an inch! 😄

I just got a 2009 Estima hybrid earlier this month-only 300 miles but loving it so far.It seems a fair bit better on fuel than my old Previa petrol and quite a bit quicker too.My local Toyota dealer say they can do a hybrid health check and a service plan for it.The ride is sumptuous and it's agile and sure-footed.

Go to Kaspar Krumis he is Estima Hybrid specialist based in Wigan 20 min drive from you. Any problems with it, he will sort it out. Walking encyclopaedia of Estima Hybrids.

Stick to the 2.4 non hybrid. 3.5 V6 would be epic but thirsty. Hybrids can suffer issues.

Kasper Krummins is an expert on the hybrids but not cheap!!
