Was on the motorway today using the lane guidance system

It then poured down like a monsoon and this stopped the system working.

Wonder if a tesla would have the same issue and how will future fully autonomous vehicles cope when there is no human interaction available

Good question. I occasionally get to use the automatic parking facilities and today was one of those days. There's something satisfying in having the car park itself. It suggests that I'd be quite happy to have it drive itself as well 🙂

I switched mine off, tired of the system tugging at the wheel constantly, when you approach a turn in the road and the road banks a bit. Car constantly trying to push you across the centre lines.

If it is not working in the rain, it maybe that the camera can't see the lane lines clearly. They have not invented road markings that are clearly visible in the wet, so if not clear, maybe the system ignores the lines to avoid errors.

Like you I've found very heavy rain can stop some of the assistance features working (so can snow).  During 40,000 miles in my Gen 4 Prius this only happened about half a dozen times, and only when the rainfall was extreme, but it also knocked out the Radar Adaptive Cruise Control and as far as I could tell the Autonomous Emergency Braking.

I haven't come across this yet in my RAV4, but I've only done 6½k so far.

The version 2 of Safety Sense includes the ability of the Lane Assist to follow the car in front soem of the time if it decides that's a better bet than using lane lines (indicated by a dotted line between the cars symbols in the Lane Assist display).  The Prius was version 1 so didn't do this.

Wonder when these cars become fully autonomous will the councils prioritise pot holes or painting the lines that are now totally worn out in most towns and cities

In my part of the country, it's the case that white lines will not be repainted at all unless the stretch of road is previously flagged as dangerous. That's the policy. I'm not sure that this is widely known, though.

Even if it is amazing.

Did this great idea come from the same folk who gave us 'Smart Motorways'?
