Auris 2014 TS - headlight bulbs replacement

Good morning,

After five years of ownership, I've came into a conclusion that I have to do something with some of the halogen bulbs, especially those in the headlights (PN: 81150-02E21).

I was thinking about replacing the original halogen bulbs with LEDs.

For the reverse light, I've ordered this one: https://www.aliexpress.com/item/4000470709148.html

But I'm not sure about those headlights, lots of information online, but often contradictory...

As for the dipped beam:

CREE XHP70 based bulbs were sometimes recommended, sometimes not (because of the beam angle)

also, I've been recommended these: https://www.alibaba.com/product-detail/newest-cost-effective-X10-H11-led_62302601365.html? (version with HIR2/9012 socket)

High beam:

There, I'm not sure at all, about which bulbs to choose...

Anyway, can somebody recommend quality LED bulbs, with correct beam angle (suitable for Auris) prefferably based on your own experience ?

Thanks in advance for your help 🙂

Good morning,

The low beam bulb also is the high beam bulb on the mk2 Auris. That is the joy of the HIR2 'system' it uses.

For low beam, the bulb is blocked by a shutter to prevent some of the beam from getting out.

These pictures/link might explain a bit more:

On reviews that I have seen, it has been suggested that the smaller the gap between the opposing LEDs (i.e. the thinner the 'blade' is) then the closer the beam pattern will be to the original halogen bulb (to reduce stray light dazzling oncoming traffic), which makes sense, as the LED is more closely emulating the filament the headlamp was designed around.  The one you have linked to is a little thicker than some.

This link is to some Vauxhall Ampera owners whose car uses the same HIR2 (Halogen Infra Red 2) bulb/system.  They don't rate the standard headlamps much at all.  It is 16 pages long - you may have to skip some bits.  But a lot of it is relevant to the Auris.

There is more space behind the headlamp bulb itself in the headlamp enclosure of an Auris, so the space limitations that the Ampera owners have will not be such a problem to you.  And the headlamps are much more accessible on an Auris, although it is worth reading the owners manual to find out how to change the bulbs (which involves removing the windscreen washer bottle filler neck - it gets in the way of the driver's side bulb).

Also, have you factored in customs duty and handling charges that might have to be paid on overseas items above a certain amount?

we have used this led bulb

https://www.autobulbsdirect.co.uk/twenty20-compact-led-headlight-bulbs-HIR2-9012-pair.html

if you order them ask for a connecting cable as without it the oem socket wont lock onto the bulb

the led bulb comes with a 3yr guarantee as well so that has to say something about the quality of them.

we have used ours for a couple of months now with no issues ,the beam pattern is exactly the

same as the halogens and abd told me the bulb will pass an mot

and the best thing is the other half has stopped moaning about the headlights and how little she can see.

Gerg:

Ah, thanks for the explanation, just an hour ago, I was examining a headlight on my car at parking lot and wondering where the high beam bulb might be 🙂

Also thank you for the link on Vauxhall forum, will go thru it in the evening. I'm OK in terms of import duties & taxes, stuff like bulbs usually comes thru without any imposed (I'm not from UK). But I have no problem to order it in EU either, at least I'll have it faster 🙂

eygo:

So you're happy with these ? These bulbs will fit in the headlights, even with that cable adaptor ?

I've noticed that some bulbs comes with some kind of "converters" attached to the cables (like xenon HID, see pic bellow), I guess that in that case, I would have to cut thru dust covers, place those converters outside headlight and then re-seal the dust covers... I'd rather avoid this...

with the extra cable you can still fit the rubber cap on the back of the headlight so everything looks stock.

if you deal with ABD ask for Kim i sent her some photo's showing why i couldn't fit the bulbs

she came back offering the cable they could supply me

ordered one day arrived the next day.

Great, thank you, I'll do some research, but I'll probably order from ABD.

So, these things are a noticeable improvement, BUT is there any forum experience of mot, etc legality concerns with such aftermarket led bulbs? They may not be xenon, but are there any likely problems?

Hi, have you got a link to the connecting cable required? The ones ABD have sent through is this https://www.hids4u.co.uk/12v-extension-cable-for-hids4u-hid-kits.html (from their sister site). This seems like the wrong cable and is used for HID kits, was this the one you used or could you point me in the right direction? Are the lights still holding up well?
