Toyota previa automatic gearbox problems

I love my previa it has been great, but  it broke down yesterday with loss of drive from the automatic gearbox box.

checked the gear box oil which was full but black.  So seems something is wearing inside.

a mechanic told me it is past repair as worn inside so will need replacement.

My question is could the diagnosis be correct which I suspect it is, therefore does anyone have a recommendation for a replacement gearbox with torque converter especially anywhere in Surrey or nearby.

thank you

The previa is 2003 with petrol 2.4 engine.

I had a Range Rover which had a transmission problem, if it was a manual box I would said it had a slipping clutch. Over revving and doing about 20 mph at about 3000 revs. Specialists said it needed a new gearbox, a friend of mine at the time suggested check transmission fluid if it's black it needs a fluid change and filter change. Done that and it drove perfectly. Just an idea that might help you but could be something more serious. As for your question in the other thread my Estima has a 2.4 engine, some models have the v6 3 litre engine.

Thank you for your reply, it has done 143,000 but had the engine rebuilt at around 120.000.

OK...a fair few miles but not that extraordinary..and these boxes are generally long lived...however it's not impossible that it's kaput...much depends on how it's been treated in the past with regular ATF checks and changes where necessary.

I assume you are getting no drive from the box at all?

Thanks,

it lost drive in auto gear then managed to drive it to a safe place in low gear but now no drive at all.

someone told me that it could be the clutch plates worn but not able to get any inspection for the past few days, so could be looking for a recon auto gearbox or else replace the car for another one

maybe best to leave it the hands of an Auto specialist..but I doubt it will be a cheap fix..IF repairable.

I wouldn't think re-con Previa auto boxes would be that common but I guess it's worth a search or two..otherwise you maybe right and see a replacement vehicle as your best choice.

Is it dark or has it got bits or flecks in it, £8-1200 is the cost of a rebuild (£3-350 in parts)

if its not a supercharged engine it will be a, A46DE or A46DF box

Edit. if its AWD your looking at a lot more money
