Hi can anyone tell me what mileage the ZZE121 engine cam chain should be replaced or is it designed to last the life of the engine under normal circumstances?

Thanks.

Hi,

Good question, but not seen any service interval specified.

In the Haynes manual it shows how to measure the chain for stretch, but if you have gone that far, then you might as well replace it anyway along with the slippers etc that come in the complete timing chain kits. several on the market, plus Toyotas own

Not seen any comment about any indicators that the chain needs replacing , like unusual noise etc ?

A bit like the value clearances which should be checked at 60k miles though a big job in any 'shims' need replacing,  mine at 120k miles can sound a little tappy but probably last longer than me

If you change the oil and filter regularly, it should out last the rest of the car 3-500k miles is not unheard-of

Ok thanks. I think usually the tensioners are the weakest link although I don't know about this particular engine.

It is serviced regularly and using only good quality oil so I'm happy to leave it.👍

Have followed this forum for some ten years and never seen mention of any chain problems.

As you can see from this pic, the chain kits are quite comprehensive and a major job to fit.

As with many such parts, often it wise to follow  the rule  - if it ain't broke  ....

One thing you can check, as it has caught a few folk out, the nearside driveshat can snap,( non auto models)   checked mine and the rubber damper thats a tight push fit with some metal fingers can hold the moisture and corrode, mine was starting to, so pushed the damper up the shaft, treated the rust etc then pushed the damper back in place and sealed with silicone.

They used to be expensive replacement parts, but now available much cheaper from aftermarket suppliers.

Never had an auto, but like the timing chain, seems Toyota, according to Haynes,  do not give any schedule for changing the auto  transmission fluid.

One of the advantages of a timing chain over a belt (possibly the only advantage) is that if appropriately serviced they will last as long as the engine.
