Alloy Wheels Peel

Hi Guys,

Has anyone else had problems with their alloy wheels on a 2001 Celica. I have the normal 5 spoke ones that came with the car but the front two are both peeling like crazy and it makes the car look old.

I am going to swap out one with the spare wheel which is still in new condition but wondered if I could paint the other one and if so what I could use to do it with ?

Does anyone know if there are any other choices I could use, do Toyota do em up, (at highly exhorbitant rates I bet!) surely I don't have to get a new wheel to sort this out do I ?

Thanks in advance for any assistance,

Tocra

Now then mate. If your car is less than 3 years old (and the alloys are not curbed) Toyota should replace 'em free as lifting lacquer is a known problem. The problem though tends to manisfest itself on the 6-spoke 17" alloys fitted to the Sport Pack Celicas. The 'standard' 16" and T Sport alloys are not known to particularly flake. Whilst you're at it how are the hubs on the rear wheels looking? This is probably the biggest problem Gen 7 Celica's have as the rust like buggery in about 5 minutes. Toyota should replace these under warranty too. Beware though as the latest replacement hubs are dark grey in colour and look naff against silver alloys. Might be worth painting 'em with smooth silver hammerite. They'll never rust again! ;)

I've heard of this problem on the mk3 MR2 too - that has same style alloys.

My late spec mk2 MR2 had bubbled alloys too when I bought it (got the dealer to refurb them).

And my mate has just told me today he's getting some new alloys (under warranty) for his Lexus IS200.

Don't Toyota learn anything? This must be costing them a fortune.

I've heard it's cos they don't put any laquer (sp?) over the paint - cos in Japan they don't have this problem cos they don't have salt on their roads. Don't know if it's true or not about the laquer...

My wife has just had a new set on her '03 MR2 on warrenty.

The mother-in-law is on her third set on her IS200.

A real problem for toyota and well known by them, they never even looked at the wifes before they ordered her a new set!
