Catloc? are they worth it?

A Catloc, or similar plate, is just a deterrent, not a promise. A wire cage will be a bigger deterrent, more challenging.  Of course, out of frustration, a thief could easy cause more damage to a door panel.

I think he had cat stolen twice but only once with a catloc.

That was Toyota in Lincolnshire, never charged for fault diagnosis , even other make cars, whereas Toyota Sidcup charges even to look at any fault, not sure why that stark difference

Catalytic converter theft with catloc second time, first time no catloc

First no catloc, replaced by insurance at repair centre, we got catloc fitted for £250at Toyota. After 9 months stolen with catloc, then got insurance to fit catalytic converter and then they took to Toyota dealer and fitted catloc

Now parking inside compound with gate

i suggested security bolts some time back, shear bolts/nuts may be an option or even triple square or security torx (centre pin)

even drilling the bold heads a lock wiring them would be an option

Edit. Just had a really simple idea, just put a big gob of weld on the head of the bolt(s) (on the side face)

So I tried this;

Works very well. they really have to crawl under there now and use some propper wirecutters before they can unbolt it.

Atleast it will delay them a bit. hopefully it will put them off.

It's a standard bolt with a hole drilled in it

Install a catlock with real high grade steel.  It is important because UK catalytic converter theft is still high.

Edit to my earlier post:

I have checked an old email from a Toyota dealer; the Toyota security bolt covers for the exhaust manifold bolts are not called TGBNGA - BOLT B, they're called

TGBNGA - BOLT C

My mistake!

Gerg,

How many of those "TGBNGA BOLT C" units do I need to ask the dealership to order - to fit?

Is it just two bolts - or are there more bolts that would need them?

Putting an order in - might as well get it right first time.

Just the two bolts that need protecting.

There are other identical bolts further along the exhaust system, but they are left untouched by thieves.

I had my cat stolen and went down the root of having a Toyota catlok 16 fitted. I now need to carry out work on the exhaust but have now discovered trhat the catlok has to be cut off at a cost in the region of £500. You will then need a new fitting kit approx £50 the protection is not as cheap as you think

update from godilocks it is also worth noting that many insurance brokers class the fiiting of catlok a modification and could affect insurance prices. At no time was i informed that such a dramatic removal  would be needed, if advised i might have had second thoughts on having one fitted,

As always dealer things add complexities and complications.
A simple cat plate off eBay will be so much easier to buy and install even as a diy job. It will protect as much as Toyota oem ones, or even better. It will be dead easy to remove, just unbolt it like any other part of the car and it will not add any extra cost to any work done on the car.

Also be wary of reduced ground clearance over speed bumps etc.

Surely that defeats the purpose of fitting the plate Tony. That would only add seconds to the thief's time using a cordless impact and socket.

Not really.
If there are security bolts installed they will not be bothered to try most likely. Cutting through plate will also slow down the process and make a lots of noise, something that they don’t want.
I maybe lucky so far since I installed mine never had to test it out if it’s any good. My cat is probably already on its end and not much precious metals left .

Exactly, that's my point. Move on to the next which could be attached using non security bolts. Use a non impact to remove them, e.g. ratchet and socket. Comparitively quiet.

Security bolts used then no point in continuing trying to cut the plate off with a cordless angle cutter or similar which makes lots of noise and takes time.
