Park Assist Issue on the New Corolla

I've had my Corolla 1.8 Excel for three weeks but when I've tried to use the parking assist to parallel park it just doesn't work, as it attempts to drive the car into the kerb, not great for the alloys!!

When I test drove a car, I did try a parallel park and it worked fine, even finished a bit further away from the kerb than you would usually leave it.

I have tried parking on both sides of the road but get the same result.

I'm able to reverse park in it so the sensors appear to be working in that situation.

I will ask to have this checked at it's first service but just wondered whether anyone else had this issue?

I think the system tries to align with the other parked cars. So if they stopped close to the kerb, your car will also try that. I doubt the parking sensors can detect the kerb itself and avoid it.

I've noticed when making it perform the apparently simpler reverse into a space that a lot depends on where you start. It doesn't seem to be trying to park equidistant from the other vehicles, merely not hit them. So if don't stop in exactly the right position you can end up too close to one of them.

When the Corolla first launched I borrowed one from work with park assist and it didn't work in my village it too would attempt to mount the kerb

Bought a chr last year and it works perfectly every time

Just ordered a corrolla which is coming soon and hope its not as bad as before

Although I recall not using the brake to control the Maneuver like I do now so maybe it was user error on my part in the Corolla

Time will soon tell

A neighbour who has an Infiniti QX30 showed me his park assist which actively hunts for a parking space for you, and if you accept, it is very efficient at getting the car parked.

As an expert, he came with me to coach me on the Corolla park assist, and out of 5 attempts, we got it to park successfully once. Mostly, mounted the curb, or aborted the attempt. We tried it in Tesco's car park as well, it would not even identify a free space, unless there was a massive gap. Then it parked diagonally!

So I don't use it.

  • 2 weeks later...

Thanks for the suggestions, I think it is to do with the other parked cars as the other day I was able to parallel park as the car I was reversing to was some way from the kerb.  I would have thought that there would have at least been a few inches allowance to avoid kerbing but it doesn't seem to be the case.
