Anybody have a link handy for where I can get a gearbox rehaul kit for a CTS?

Hi,

No, not as such, but remember reading this magazines article on gearboxes last year.

https://www.greatmagazines.co.uk/car-mechanics-april-2019

What it did show is  that you need a load of special tools  such as extractors and pullers etc ,plus details of the fine feeler gauge adjustments needed.

It left me with no doubt that its probably one of the hardest car diy jobs and one to avoid .

Enquired the other week  at a local specialist  gearbox place about such a rebuild as getting some whine from my box, they said they no longer have the Corollas recon boxes on the shelf, but could still do a rebuild, around the £400 - £500, so seems the trade knows where to get the bearing etc from, some bearing kits on eBay, but not idea how different your box is from the standard rollas, just the actual gear ratios or different shafts etc ??

Broken yours or like mine, getting noisier ?

This good video covers a full  c50 strip down, though no idea where they get the parts from other than some of the bearings and oil seals .

Seems 5th gear is a commond problem and can be found on eBay for £190.

Think getting the box reconditioned by a specialist is a quicker and cheaper way.

Hi,

Gearbox is not broken or noisy, just that somebody damaged the side of my car during the night a couple of weeks ago and didn't leave a note, so I was considering doing a conversion to an MR2 Spyder rather than going to the expense of replacing the front and rear door, front wing, front bumper, repairing rear quarter and door jam alongside the materials needed for prep work and painting. Having read upon the costs of the conversion though, I don't think I'll bother.

Will try and find two second hand colour matched doors, wing and bumper and do the work all myself. I didn't want to go through the insurance as the car is worth a lot more to me compared to what I think they would give me for it, considering I've not long put a suspension kit on recently and having some engine work done which was not far short of 300.
