Hi has anyone removed the CAT from their starlet before? I know that without the CAT won't pass MOT, so how did everyone do it?

Don't know if you can buy them off the shelf for the Starlet, but you basically need a length of pipe with suitable flanges (ooh err) on the ends, or if it's a sleeve fit slightly bigger diameter than existing exhaust, the same length as your cat (longer if it's sleeved). Some cats have the lambda sensor hole there so it would need suitable threaded hole for that but most are in the frontpipe

Trouble is you'd need to put the cat back for MOT :( Easy job unless you can't be a :censor: d like me :D

There under the car on the N/A starlet don't really think it would be worth the hassle TBH on a turbo it's a different matter the cat it on the down pipe straight after the turbo and is a HUGE restriction.

Dude above me is right, you won't get a big improvement replacing the cat. The exhaust will be louder and it will rev slightly more freely at higher revs. You'll probably lose some torque low down as well.

For the hassle and expense...

Then again, if you really want to do it. Get in bed with your local powerflow dealer. Get them to make a pipe and they might even change it out MOT time. Problem is, Powerflow don't use new flanges (unless they changed in the last year). So that means they will hack up your old cat pipe, unless you can supply a set of flanges (again oo err) :)

my mate welded flanges onto his exhaust and then used quick release levers to secure them rather than using bolts, the quick release levers are the type that shimano use on their racing bike wheels, theres a cam inside so when push the lever it applies force to the flange.

he can now change from cat to decat in about 10 minutes, the majority of that time being the time it takes to jack the car up.

I would think that because the engine is probably tuned to work with a cat, taking it away will remove some back pressure and on some engines that has a detrimental effect dunno about 4efe and 4efte though?

have a nice day

One of the benefits of having a Sera and the strange import regulations is that the cat on a imported car with no UK equivalent isn't tested...

As long as your car passes its emissions test it will pass an MOT without a CAT, mine did.

yeah but don't you need the cat to pass the test in the first place?!?

the cat takes out a lot of NOX i think and sulphur and other crap.

It depends how well you know your local garage I suppose. Mine knew I was just going to put it on for the MOT and take it back off afterwards so he told me not to bother and tested it first, it passed so he just pretended it had a cat on it.

Depends on how much they want your money, some might not look and probably dont think too.

Others might be gits, my old Sciricco Scala failed because there was no fluid in the windscreen washer tank. My parents Focus failed because the rear number plate was cracked. The worst one is, just recently, Arnold Clark Volvo tried to fail my bros Volvo on a defectice spoiler brake light! Which is not required by the MOT!

But honestly the power gains are not worth the expense or the hassle.
