Auris 08 intermittent starting

Typical day:

Car starts usually on 3rd go in the morning, sometimes 1st time sometimes more (parked on kerb/road - downhill)

After standing still in carpark at work for 7+ hours it starts first time for journey home.

If I stop, do a quick 5/10 min shop, get back in, it doesn't start till maybe 5/6 tries.

But a longer journey then stop it usually starts first time.

As its intermittent, no rhyme or reason the garage couldn't help me.

Please help, I'm losing my mind.

When you say it won't start, does the starter motor turn but the engine will not fire up ?

Yea, it starts up, well it ticks over, I even have to put my foot on throttle to try and catch it sometimes.

Its odd that it happens at different times throughout the day. I mean it could take one go into he morning (rarely), drive for 30 mins stop and start back up with no problems.

But if I drove for 5/10 mins stopped and tried again it probably take me 3-7 times....or maybe first time though this is rare.

I had a new Battery last year.

Which engine does it have?

A quick search in the forum's reveals there is a problem with Toyota diesel starter motors when the engine is hot.

The start does not turn fast enough to enable starting. This seems a possibility for you.

See this thread, I have experienced this on diesel engines, diesel engines need a good quality starter.
