New rules on MOT testing for light vehicles

Due to the unfolding COVID-19 situation, cars and vans and motorcycles due their MOT from 30 March 2020 will have their MOT extended by 6 months.

This will continue until confirmed otherwise.

This will allow vehicle owners to continue to be able to get to work where this absolutely cannot be done from home or do essential shopping.

Vehicles must be kept in a roadworthy condition and drivers can be prosecuted if they drive an unsafe vehicle.

We have published guidance for garages.

We've also published 2 guides for the public:

Some clarification: https://cardealermagazine.co.uk/publish/mots-due-next-year-will-get-automatic-6-month-extension/189624

The extension is applied 7 days before the original expiry date. Example - an MOT originally due on 7th June 2020 will have the six month extension added on or after 1st June 2020.

The legislation allows for further changes to be made - for example if lockdown is extended.

IMO the key thing to remember is :-

Vehicles must be kept in a roadworthy condition and drivers can be prosecuted if they drive an unsafe vehicle.

That’s always been the case, but worth highlighting.

Government confirms the MOT extension is under regular review, and could be changed or cancelled at any time -
