Hi all, Just had a second hand engine fitted in my sons 2007 1,2 petrol yaris. Its turning over but wont start. Could it be the ecu isnt recognising the new engine? Any advice welcome thanks.

Nancy, you need to include all relevant info on the engine that you took out & why, and on the replacement engine. What you have done & checked out a list would be helpful to all the very experienced members on here to be able to perhaps help you with your problems.

its a 1.3 petrol. He lost the oil cap at one point and had a temporary one. He replaced it with a proper one but a couple of months later out of the blue it started making a clunking noise. A friend of his girlfriends mum brought a 'mechanic' friend round who said it was the coil packs. After much messing around starting up time and time again it was left. He then got the AA round who started it up, by which time the noise was worse than ever, and was told it was the timing chain. It was taken to a garage at which point I have since found out it was only turning over but not starting so they went with the assumption the chain had snapped and recommended a new engine. We took it somewhere else but by this time the Battery was flat. This guy put a Battery pack on it but it still was only turning over but not firing up. We  had a donor engine fitted. It has the original flywheel, ECU, transponder and key. Apparently they have double checked all engine fitting but it still only turns over and wont start as if the immobiliser is stopping it firing up.

Hope this is enough info.....thanks

Is it getting fuel ? can you here the pump prime ? Does it have spark ? will it fire if you spray the intake with starting fluid (easy start)

Edit. its also worth checking the fusible links on the Battery terminal

Thanks I'll ask them to check.

Does nobody think it needs a diagnostic check?

I did say in my first post "Any codes" have you scanned it for codes

A garage with 'qualified' mechanics having problems getting a car they are working on to start, and we are giving suggestions!
As Bob has said, get codes. The mechanics need to check everything, which the OP says they are doing. Hope they remembered the earths!
Bernard also said make a check list of what has been done. I hope the engine they installed was not faulty!
I have seen You Tube videos of garages passing on work to You Tuber mechanics, who fixes the car!

Let's hope the garage find the problem and get the car started.

all the ecu fuses are worth a check too (internal fuse box)

Trouble is, more and more are 'swap it and see' merchants these days, good trustworthy mechanics/technicians who diagnose faults in a logical order are becoming harder to find.

Is the engine out of the same vin (eg JTD or Vnk) if not they wont start in it and the crank angle sensor plate will need changing.

Had it on myu 2002 yaris was VNK and they had put a JTD engine in it.
