Boot won't open

I have a d4d brilliant avensis. Due to the lock down I haven't drove the car in 5 days and of course my Battery died. I got it up and running but now my boot won't open. Theres no access to the boot via inside. Is it a fuse issue? I've noticed an opening for a key beside the outside handle but the car key won't fit it. Any ideas?

There should be an inspection door on the inside, where the mechanism is. Pop the seats  and crawl in.

That's how it usually is with Toyota's. You take the plate, and can manually unlock the boot.

Are you sure your key fob works? Maybe because of empty Battery you need to register it to the car again.

Just because the Battery goes flat doean't mean that the car has to be paired to the key.

If the Battery is flat, pop a new one in and Bob's your uncle.

Thanks for this. I cant get the seats to go down. The key fob works for the doors OK. If I could get into the boot I wouldnt mind crawling but the seats don't fold down 😞

Yes I've read that one. It mentions the key barrel which I have but my car key doesn't fit that barrel... Am I being silly? Is there a different key for the boot?!?

It's the same key.

Maybe the key won't work because the barrel is caked up through lack of use.

Try spraying WD40 into it.

My key won't fit in. Tried spraying it, it just feels like it the totally wrong shape. It's weird because the key fits the glove compartment, why not the boot. I might have to remove a seat by force to access all stuff in my boot I need at this rate lol

You'll see it better tomorrow, in the daylight.

Try putting the wee red pipe of the WD40 can right into the lock and spraying any crap out.  I've had that before, because the lock is never used it fills up with dust and the key won't go in.

If you have the Techstream software and VCI, I seem to recall the two way testing functions include opening the boot.

Tried again this morning before work and the key won't go in despite gallon of wd. I then drove to work and locked the car using key into the driver door. Heard a large clunk. So I unlocked the driver door again and this engaged the central locking, the boot now opens!!! How bizarre... Thanks everyone for your advice, hopefully this helps anyone else with a saloon avensis.

I was just sitting in my car listening to the radio and looking at the owner's manual.

On page 44 there are instructions on how to open your boot with the key.

However, the instructions say to use the master key.

It might be worth trying it for future use.

as i bought the car second hand, it only came with 2 keys, both are identical, but that's interesting. i was doing research and lots of cars come with a 3rd key called a valet key which you would give to a valet but that key wouldn't open the boot or the glove box.so your stuff would be valuable inside the glove box and boot. on some cars there is a button in the glove box to disengage the boot being opened too but these are on newer models i think. BTW im going to tackle the front wheel bearing,,,,is this a big job on a avensis??? thanks Stephen!

The valet key is grey, I've got mine, there is no Battery in it, it's just a key.

I've never had to do a wheel bearing on an Avensis.  Good luck.

I have done a few wheel bearings and so long as you have a the correct tools, it's not too difficult. You need a 30 mm 12 side socket for the hub nut. Be careful with the bolt to the ABS sensor. I had one break, but I managed to extra the remainder without damaged in the thread. It might be easier to disconnect the sensor from under the wheel arch liner. When disconnecting the steer track rod end, undo the bolt until it's level with the top of the thread, then use a hammer to tap the nut to loosen the track rod from the hub. I have a ball joint tool for that. Do the same for any stubborn bolt. You need needle nose or circlip pliers to remove the circlip. I have a 10 ton press, but there are wheel bearing removal/installation kits at much lower prices. I find they usually are stuck on. The order of removal of the bearing is to drive out the inner hub first, then from the other side remove the rest of the bearing. An angle grinder is needed to cut the inner race off the inner hub. When replacing the bearing, start with bearing into the hub carrier, then with suitable support on the inner bearing race drive the inner hub in. Replace circlip. Then install hub carrier back on to car.
Sounds easy when you have done a few, but seized or corroded bolts could be your issue.

No that doesn't sound difficult at all lol!! I might have to think this one out a bit more... I don't want to end up with my car off the road and it does sound beyond my capabilities.. Thank you very much, I think you've saved me a lot of pain here... Time to get it to my mechanic I think 🙂
