I'm currently experiencing an anomaly with my fuel. The light came on when my range said 24 miles. I emptied a Jerry can worth into the tank and now shows 2 bars and no light however the distance says 8 miles till empty. I'm confused. I'm either empty or not lol.

Some models can show false range readings if filled up with less than 15 litres. Also the low fuel light comes on when there is still a reserve remaining and the range readings exclude the reserve. In the case of the Aygo the reserve is approx 5.25 litres.

Have you been running the car's engine static on your driveway? This could give a false reading, as range calculation requires the car to be moving for an accurate reading.

Also, if you've filled up with a jerry can, then you may have introduced extra air into the fuel tank, giving the fuel sensor a false reading. Take the fuel cap off and run the engine (statically) for a few minutes. Put the cap back on and take car out on your shopping run. Hopefully the fuel gauge/range will correct itself.

Often, if the reading is very low, adding just a few litres isn't enough to 'unstick' the arm with the float on it. Take it out and swerve around a bit to cause the level to slop up and down to unstick it. This is normal, happens on all cars I've had anything to do with.

My friend lends me his fiesta van occasionally and that's just the same. Takes ages for it to adjust to a tenners worth.
