I found my clutch pedal sensor disconnected, what dies it mean?

I bought second hand Hilux Vigo 2015, manual, diesel. While wiring radio I noticed that clutch pedal sensor is disconnected (not sure it's a sensor, just some socket on the clutch pedal) the other part was hanging next to it so I just connected it back.

But now I'm questioning what was going on? Car worked even if it was disconnected, should it? Or it had to be bypassed somewhere? What is even purpose of that sensor? Is it just solved by connecting it back? Can I just forget about it?

From the sound of it its probably the safety switch - which makes sure the starter won't run unless the clutch pedal is pressed. I would fix that, I personally love this feature.
